A mother bird uses her feathered wings to provide warmth and security to her fledglings. With her daily and consistent nourishment and encouragement, the young soon grow strong and are ready to tumble from the nest, and spread their wings to take flight in the world.
It is humanity’s duty to share, and the Daily Bread Food Bank’s greatest endeavour is to provide for the basic human need for nourishment - to give those in need the energy to embark on brighter futures.
The fledgling taking shelter under the wing of the mother bird represents the tireless nurturing and nourishment provided for by the Daily Bread Food Bank throughout the year.
The main food products used were baked beans for the inside of the wings and the herring fillets as the feathers on the outside of the wings. The bird itself is a robin so the ‘red breast’ is constructed of tomato sauce and to balance the meal idea-we created a nest of spaghetti. The head of the bird and the body of the chicks are formed with canned turkey[relating to the bird concept] and the blue robin’s eggs the birds are breaking out of are tuna cans. We selected these cans for their blue color and size. The feathered texture around the eyes were created using layers of tea bag packets. [We also used non visible filler cans of mxed veggies]
