On March 20, founding partner Bruce Kuwabara will deliver the 2025 Frances K. Smith Lecture, hosted by Agnes (Agnes Etherington Art Centre) at Queen’s University.

During his lecture, “Catalyzing Change,” Kuwabara will share insights and learnings from his architectural career — which spans more than four decades — reflecting on themes of art and community, including Agnes Reimagined.

Since its founding, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre has been a changemaker in Kingston’s arts and culture landscape, upholding its mission to further the cause of art and community. The vision for reimagining the gallery for the 21st century is to return a house to a home.

The transformation of Agnes includes a new three-floor addition to support a major increase in exhibition and alternative programming spaces. There will be spaces for curatorial experimentation and public engagement, including a maker space, technical art history and art conservation labs, and the first-ever Indigenous self-determination spaces, which Indigenous community members, artists, and staff can use for cultural practices and traditions.

He has led the design for 14 of KPMB’s 18 Governor General Award-winning projects, holds a Gold Medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada, commended for “shaping our built landscape in lasting ways.”
