Contemporary Calgary, a major centre for arts and culture, has received $40 million from the Government of Alberta for the final phase of its Capital Renovation and Expansion Project.
A Calgary landmark located in the former Centennial Planetarium, it has served as a cultural and educational facility since it was commissioned for Canada’s 1967 centennial. Designed in a Brutalist style by McMillan, Long and Associates, the Planetarium has housed a space science centre, the Calgary Science Centre, and since 2019, has been home to Contemporary Calgary.
The transformation of the site — led by KPMB Architects and GGA-Architecture — includes renovating existing spaces, adding new galleries, upgrading the dome, and expanding public spaces throughout the site to help Contemporary Calgary fulfil its mission to be a premier destination for visual, modern, and contemporary art.
“This project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine an architectural gem and create a space that is both innovative and deeply connected to the community,” founding partner Bruce Kuwabara said.
A new building will be added to the south side of the site to provide Contemporary Calgary with a new class A gallery space and more space for exhibitions, arts programming, and amenities, including retail, food and drink, and events. And renovations to the Planetarium will improve functionality, accessibility, and energy performance.
Space will also be created on the site for a park that connects Contemporary Calgary to Bow River and creates opportunities for outdoor art and events.
