The Downsview Framework Plan was named a People’s Choice Award winner at the 2024 AZ Awards Gala on June 21. A finalist for the AZ Awards in the “Urban Design – Unbuilt Developments” category, the Framework Plan was chosen as People’s Choice honoree from a shortlist of three projects.
Established by AZURE in 2011, the AZ Awards celebrates outstanding achievements in design and architecture globally, spotlighting groundbreaking projects, products, and concepts across eight key categories. This year, the Framework Plan was one of 69 finalists chosen for “exemplifying global excellence in design at all scales.”
Designed with Henning Larsen, SLA, and Urban Strategies Inc., the Downsview Framework Plan envisions the transformation of Downsview Airport into a transit- and community-oriented hub inclusive of affordable housing units for 80,000 residents; a community centre; community-led initiatives like markets, maker spaces and urban farms; a network of green, biodiverse spaces and parks; and thousands of job opportunities.
When developing the Framework Plan, the design team worked with consultants, local and Indigenous communities, and city-wide stakeholders in Toronto and engaged with more than 3,000 people to ensure a collective and informed vision that draws on and supports the diversity of Downsview and the city of Toronto.
The result is a framework for a series of connected, vibrant, and healthy communities supported by sustainable urban systems — a place where people can truly live, work, and play.
In addition to its People Choice Award win, the Framework Plan has also received awards from the National Urban Design Awards, the Toronto Urban Design Awards, and the World Architecture Festival.
