KPMB recently hosted the Canadian launch of CriticalProductive Journal, a peer-reviewed academic journal focused on culture, arts, architecture, urbanism, and spatial practice.

Edited by Milton S.F. Curry, Professor of Architecture and Senior Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Engagement at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, the journal publishes innovative research, scholarship, and creative work that advance the ideas and momentum of critical social movements.

We welcomed Curry, the founding editor, Grace Teresa Cillo, the managing editor, and Shawn Rickenbacker, Editorial Collective member and Associate Professor of Architecture and Director of the J. Max Bond Center for Urban Futures, City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture to our office for a conversation moderated by founding partner Bruce Kuwabara.

The group, along with KPMB staff and guests from art, design, architecture, and culture communities, discussed sourcing and utilizing data in design, the evolution of the public realm in cities, and the concept of democratic space.

Distributed by the MIT Press, CriticalProductive invites cultural theorists, designers, architects, urbanists, artists, and activists to reflect on contemporary culture and experiment with provocative ideas, such as how to disrupt normative paradigms.

The journal is published thrice a year and is currently accepting submissions for its Fall/Winter 2025 issue which will explore non-space and resistance. Its inaugural Fall 2024 issue on sovereignty, populism, and democratic space can be viewed here.
