The Center for Computing & Data Sciences has won a 2024 American Architecture Award in the Schools and Universities category.

Presented by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the American Architecture Awards is one of the nation’s highest and most prestigious building awards program, honouring new and cutting-edge design.

A landmark for Boston University and the city of Boston, the Center showcases the University’s rigour and excellence in computing and data science. A vertical campus with shifting, cantilevered volumes, it brings 3000 students, faculty, and staff together under one roof, giving them a flexible, welcoming space for research, study, and teaching.

The Center is also the University’s first LEED Platinum building, designed to meet the University’s Climate Action Plan’s goals, contribute to its carbon neutrality target by 2040, and contribute to Boston’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

At the Center, eight green roofs with various native grasses, sedges, and wildflowers double as terraces, complete with seating. They reduce the urban heat island effect, retain rainwater, prevent runoff, and connect people to nature. They also provide new biodiverse habitats for plant and animal species, offering songbirds and pollinating insects shelter and food and acting as a refuge from urban wildlife stresses.
